Students and staff engaged together in curriculum partnership is a new way of doing education at WSU. Drawing on 21C’s signature idea of Partnership Pedagogy, as part of 21C Curriculum Challenges, our students are already collaborating with staff and external partners to co-create curriculum and learning experiences for students. WSU students are at the table when curriculum is being planned, approved, designed, taught, evaluated and improved on. In the routine cycle of curriculum development, students’ perspectives are no longer only represented through feedback surveys, they participate in ideas generation; they test and expand staff ideas; they research the latest pedagogical practices; and they create resources and learning activities. In turn, staff learn the capabilities and talents students have, and students learn exactly what it takes for a teacher / lecturer to design learning experiences that are engaging, authentic and that focus on support students to shape their path to success.
Currently, the 21C student curriculum partners (SCPs) have co-created an elective unit; developed videos that have gone viral; they are co-developing a Curiosity Pod to induct students into partnership; they are co-designing a professional learning program for staff to craft a partnership project; and they are hosting the 2021 National Students as Partners Roundtable (link to new page) in November. One of our long-time 21C student curriculum partners – Maria Manthos – describes what she has learned through working in partnership with staff:
The next step for the 21C project is to expand the opportunities for even more staff and more students to engage in curriculum partnership. We want Partnership to be your pedagogy!
How can you get involved? In the second half of 2021, the 21C project will launch the Partnership XChange (PX-Hub) which is an exciting opportunity for Schools and staff to propose curriculum partnership projects that are collaborations with students and are designed to radically transform the student experience. Stay tuned for further detail.
