2016 | - Nov-Dec: The genesis of the 21C Project (formerly the 21C Curriculum Project) began in late 2016 with a paper to Executive written by Professor Simon Barrie.

2017 | - The Board of Trustees agrees to fund a year-long project which is progressed 5 key in initiatives:
- The Course Load and Planning Group (CLPG) act as the steering for the 21C Curriculum Project for this first year.
- Conversations are ongoing with Schools (via School Curriculum Pilots) about the need for a new degree architecture that enables more flexibility, distinctiveness, cross-disciplinarity, and the capacity for micro-credentialling to address the challenges emerging from the future of work and society.
- Partnership Pedagogy (opens in a new window) emerges as the educational heart of the 21C Project.
- Through 21C, the University becomes an Access Partner of the Higher Education Academy (now Advance HE) enabling it to offer the Western Educational Fellowship Scheme (WEFS) (opens in a new window).

2019 | - The Flagship Curriculum Projects (opens in a new window) result in a 60+ new prototyped curriculum elements (PDF, 198.32 KB) (opens in a new window) (21C Curiosity Pods, 21C Units, and 21C Sub-Majors) that have been designed with Partnership Pedagogy (opens in a new window) at their heart. A selection of these prototyped elements is captured in the 21C Storyboard (opens in a new window).
- The prototyped curriculum elements lead to a renewed set of design features for 21C Curiosity Pods (PDF, 63.2 KB) (opens in a new window) and 21C Sub-Majors (PDF, 49.32 KB) (opens in a new window). The first 21C Sub-major on Global Sustainability partners with United Nations University.
- Round 2 of the Western Educational Fellowship (opens in a new window) results in 27 new Fellows.
- The 21C Student Curriculum Partners (opens in a new window) are successful in their bid to host the 2021 National Students as Partners Roundtable at Western.
- July: The Board of Trustees supports an additional 3 years of 21C project funding which broadens out to include three dimensions: 21C Curriculum (opens in a new window), 21C Academic Capability (opens in a new window) and 21C Culture (opens in a new window).
- Oct: The 21C Project launches the Curriculum Challenges strategy focused on four transdisciplinary areas: Future Thinkers (opens in a new window), Global Citizens (opens in a new window), Innovative Entrepreneurs (opens in a new window), and Sustainability Advocates (opens in a new window). Over three years, this strategy will deliver up to 100 new 21C Curiosity Pods, 24 distinctive transdisciplinary Sub-Majors, and revitalise the University’s three existing combined double degrees. These Challenges will be led by eight Curriculum Challenges.
- The first 21C digital badge is awarded for students that have completed the Sustainability Bootcamp 21C Curiosity Pod.(opens in a new window)
- The first 21C Culture (opens in a new window) initiative encourages staff to complete the Teaching Cultures Survey which will obtain foundational benchmarking data on staff perceptions of how valued learning and teaching is at Western.
