How do I apply?
Complete the online application form (opens in a new window) and submit a digital artefact outlining your proposal. The purpose of the digital artefact is for you or your research team to explain the research question, methodology, sample/participants, and the expected benefits of the project.
What are assessors looking for?
Grants that can provide:
- seed funding, for proof of concept and pilot projects (usually around $2,000)
- extension funding, for an established project which can incorporate a side-project meeting the grant criteria
- launching large team-based projects (up to $10,000)
Highly regarded proposals will be strategic, develop staff capability and plan for effective dissemination.
It may be helpful to review these considerations (opens in a new window).
Who will assess applications and what are the criteria?
Grants will be assessed by the Head of Teaching and Curriculum, Learning Futures and the Chair(s) of the Badugulang T&L Scholarship Advisory Group. This includes evaluation based on the following criteria:
- The proposal explains how the project will develop staff capability in SoTL (staff capability development plan - 25%)
- The proposal explains what the expected outcomes of the project are and how they will be disseminated (dissemination plan - 25%)
- The proposal explains how the funds will be spent within Western's approved time frame for 2022 end of financial year cut off (budget allocation - 15%)
- The proposal articulates: the research problem, alignment with the T&L direction at Western (including strategies and programs of research), intended research design and impact (digital artefact - 35%)
What is allowable in the Budget?
The budget can include the following line items:
- capability building via short courses (e.g., data literacy, SoTL genre writing, digital literacy)
- buy-in specific expertise (e.g., statistics, videography support, focus group transcription)
- materials and equipment to support the project (e.g., cameras, microphones)
- research assistant support (e.g., undertaking literature review, data collection)
- buy-out of team member(s) time (e.g., marking)
Conditions and restrictions:
- suppliers providing services, materials and/or equipment must already be pre-approved through Western’s procurement process
- staff employed (e.g., as research assistants) must be employed on a professional staff contract CEA at an appropriate level
How do I create a digital artefact?
Western's Digital Uplift Framework encourages academics to have an active presence in the Technology-Enabled Learning (TEL) environment. Presenting your research proposal via a digital artefact is an opportunity to engage with the resources available to all Western staff and gain experience in using them, a skill that may translate to teaching practice.
Western has many resources to assist you with creating a digital artefact (opens in a new window).
** The value of the research proposed will be considered, not the quality of the digital artefact! **
