Research & Higher Degrees

School of Law Research

Our research examines law's social, economic and political influences and consequences, and aims to find ways that legal regulation and regulatory structures might make a positive difference in people's lives.

We are committed to research that promotes social justice, human rights and good governance across local, national, regional, international and outer space spheres. Much of our research focuses on Greater Western Sydney, an area of rapid development, aspiration, social and economic disadvantage and ethnic, cultural, religious and linguistic diversity, where small changes in the regulatory framework can have a major impact on individuals and communities.

Founded 20 years ago, we have an established reputation for innovative and internationally focused research that provides an evidence base for better policy formation, informs the design of legislation, achieves greater accountability and casts a critical gaze on the legal issues of our time. Our research has resulted in the development of legal policy, legislation, case law and service delivery options.

Our research is interdisciplinary, critical, cross-jurisdictional, intra-national and grounded on the unique aspects of jurisprudential research. Our perspective is pragmatic and contextual.

Our research, research engagement and partnerships have informed and influenced  public debate, policy and policy makers, as well as legislation, case law, professional organisations and service delivery options, in local, national and global contexts
