Dr Mushtaq A Khan

Mushtaq Khan was born in 1938 in a small village near Gujrat in Pakistan. He graduated in 1959 from King Edward Medical College, Lahore and worked at the local Mayo Hospital.

Between 1961 and 1965, Dr Khan trained in the United Kingdom and received an MRCP from the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh. Upon returning to Pakistan, Dr Khan established the first Paediatric Departments in three hospitals: Holy Family, Central Government and Poly Clinic. In 1978, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh. Dr Mushtaq Khan has served as Professor of Paediatrics at the Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre in Karachi, and later at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences.

Professor Khan introduced Paediatrics and Child Health in Northern Pakistan. He designed and implemented two ground-breaking projects: Family Health Care and the Rural Child Survival program. He served as the National Coordinator of the Acute Respiratory Infections Control Programme in Pakistan. In addition, he served on the WHO’s Technical Advisory Groups for Polio, Immunization and Diarrhoea Control.

Prof. Mushtaq contributed significantly to Child Health by delivering a series of talks on television and authoring more than 15 books. He currently leads a retired life in Islamabad.
