Shifting Sands in Arts and Humanities Research

Professor Sharon Bell (Western Sydney University)
The School of Humanities and Communication Arts and the Writing and Society Research Centre proudly present the School's 9th Annual Postgraduate Conference, Interventions and Intersections: Shifting Sands in Arts and Humanities Research.
This event is a two-day interdisciplinary postgraduate conference to be held on 22 and 23 June 2017 at Western Sydney University's Parramatta South Campus.
Designed to bring research students together from across the various disciplines, the conference will offer an opportunity to present research in a friendly and supportive environment while giving students the chance to gain valuable feedback from academic staff and peers.
'Shifting Sands' suggests the constant movement of ideas and institutional formations impacting upon postgraduate research, and academia more broadly. This year's conference theme reflects both the anxieties and the opportunities which emerge from the changing landscape of the contemporary university.
Additionally, recent political events have displaced long-held beliefs in systems, methods and predictions, such that the notion of 'shifting sands' might equally indicate a climate of political upheaval. This theme is not intended to prescribe the contents of HCA student presentations. Rather, it will frame discussions about the postgraduate journey and encourage consideration of the variability of research/creative practices and employment in the fields of the humanities and communication arts. The shifting sands of our intellectual, artistic, professional and political worlds create paths of ever-changing possibilities.
In this context, Western Sydney University's School of Humanities and Communication Arts is hosting its annual postgraduate conference, Interventions and Intersections: Shifting Sands in Arts and Humanities Research. This conference will provide postgraduate students with an opportunity to present their research to peers and academics, and to form professional and academic connections. Panel sessions will be held on life after the PhD and academic publishing. Masterclasses will provide opportunities for students to learn about interdisciplinary, digital, artistic, and philosophical research methodologies.
Keynote presentations will be given by Emeritus Professor Susan Sheridan (Flinders University) and Professor Sharon Bell (Western Sydney University).
