It is a time of considerable change in the higher education sector – for the humanities in particular. The increasing emphasis on adaptability, marketability and employability can alert us to new ideas and resources, or make us feel even more alone and unprepared than before, often at the same time. In this climate, the 10th anniversary edition of the Interventions and Intersections conference offers itself as a space in which our diverse postgraduate community from the School of Humanities and Communication Arts and the Writing and Society Research Centre can meet to engage and reflect upon research in all its complexities. We want to encourage communication within and between disciplines; to discuss work strategies and career aspirations; and to value our research, and our research community.

Interventions and Intersections is an opportunity for HDR students to both learn about other students’ research, and to develop or practise their presentation skills. In that spirit, we invite students to submit an abstract to present their research. Proposals can be for either an individual twenty-minute paper, or an hour-long panel of three papers. Papers are welcome, though not required, to align themselves with the 10th anniversary Interventions and Intersections Postgraduate research conference theme – Fostering Research Communities in the Communication Arts and Humanities. Possible topics under this theme include:

  • Collaboration
  • Isolation
  • Community
  • Trajectory
  • Continuity
  • Adaptability

This year there is also an opportunity for publication. A selection of papers from this conference will be published in a 2019 issue of Global Media Journal – Australian Edition.

The conference will include panel sessions on publishing and post-doctoral employment; masterclasses on interdisciplinary, digital, artistic, and qualitative research methods; and the Humanities and Communication Arts school 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) competition.

The conference committee invites papers from literary studies, creative writing, music, film studies, philosophy, history, advertising and public relations, journalism, design, cultural and social analysis, Indigenous Australian studies, media arts, international studies, interpreting and translation, TESOL, languages and linguistics, and all other fields under the umbrella of humanities and communication arts.

Please email either a paper or panel proposal for consideration. Proposals for individual papers should include an abstract of no more than 300 words and a biography of no more than 100 words. Proposals for panels should include the panel title, and an abstract of no more than 300 words and a biography of no more than 100 words for each presenter.

Proposals can either be included in the body of the email or attached as a Word document and sent to AdminHCA@westernsydney.edu.au; please use the subject: ‘HDR conference submission’. Proposals are due by 28 May 2018. Everyone who submits a proposal will be notified of the outcome by 1 June 2018.
