Description

The School of Law Research Seminar presented by our guest speaker, Jared Sharp is on 'Addressing systemic racism in the criminal justice system through a decolonising approach'. The seminar will canvas Jared’s current research that seeks to address systemic racism in the criminal justice system by taking a decolonising approach, which prioritises Indigenous Justice as a means of empowering and giving autonomy to Aboriginal people in the justice system. Jared's background includes law, education, mediation and restorative justice. Jared has worked primarily for Aboriginal legal aid organisations in Western Australia and the Northern Territory. He worked for almost 10 years for the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA) as a senior criminal lawyer and Manager, Law and Justice Projects. In 2012, he received a Churchill Fellowship to consider culturally strengthening initiatives in Canada, New Zealand and the United States that could reduce the negative impacts of the justice system on Aboriginal people.
