Training for First Responders Half-day (4-hour) This 4-hour training session is tailored for Western Sydney University staff and students who may be the first point of contact for students or staff needing assistance with sexual assault or sexual harassment related issues. Training is delivered by the Gendered Violence Research Network (UNSW) and facilitated by Western's Respect.Now.Always. campaign. This training is designed to: • Increase knowledge of sexual harassment and sexual assault and how people are affected. • Provide staff or students who may be the first point of contact with the necessary skills to: 1. respond appropriately to disclosures and safely support students/staff who are affected by sexual assault and sexual harassment 2. Emphasise that first responders are not counsellors 3. Emphasise that a first responder role should seek to create a safe space where students/staff who are affected by sexual assault and sexual harassment feel able to disclose and to seek support should they choose to do so. 4. Ensure that organisational and staff responses should be appropriate to legislative, policy and cultural contexts. The training covers: 1. What is sexual assault and sexual harassment? This module will increase participants’ understanding of sexual assault and sexual harassment and how people are affected by: • Defining the range of acts encompassed by the term sexual assault and sexual harassment, and relevant policy and legislation. • Presenting recent statistics on the prevalence of various forms of sexual assault and sexual harassment in Australia, and in higher education more specifically. • Definitions of consent, with a focus on drugs and alcohol and consent. • Technology facilitated abuse (e.g. sexting, cyber stalking, revenge porn). 2. What is sexual assault and sexual harassment? This module will inform participants about the effects of sexual harassment and sexual assault on students and staff, friends, family and supporters and college residents by: • Presenting select research findings on the impact of various forms of sexual assault and sexual harassment on staff and students who are directly affected. • Presenting and discussing case studies about the impacts and effects of sexual harassment and sexual assault. Case studies will illustrate the specific needs more vulnerable or at-risk groups. 3. Effective First Response This module will provide participants with the skills to provide a safe and effective first response to students or staff who are affected by sexual assault and sexual harassment under relevant Western Sydney University policies and procedures by: • Introducing and practising response frameworks. • Considering “duty of care” to people affected. • Addressing common concerns about privacy and confidentiality • Discussing the impact responding can have on responders and appropriate self-care • strategies • Information on bystander intervention initiatives Further information: Available for staff and students.
