Description

This seminar describes an environmental education project for addressing complex socio-ecological problems, such as climate change and ecosystem restoration. We developed an integrated set of student activities that included: (a) creative thinking skills, (b) collaborative problem-solving techniques for science inquiry; (c) art-making experiences to explore different perspectives and strengthen observation skills, and (d) public communication activities. We tested this module at several U.S. biological stations to improve university student learning in a suite of skills necessary for addressing significant environmental problems. I discuss program results, as well as barriers and opportunities for incorporating interdisciplinary teaching to engage multiple ways of knowing the world. Our international guest speaker, Professor Susan K. Jacobson is a Distinguished Teaching Scholar and Professor in the Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation and the director of the Program for Studies in Tropical Conservation at the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida. She teaches and conducts research on the human dimensions of wildlife management. She has published over 150 journal articles, book chapters, and books dealing with environmental management education and natural resource conservation in the U.S., Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Her books include Communication Skills for Conservation Professionals, 2nd Edition, published in 2009 by Island Press, and Conservation Education and Outreach Techniques, 2nd edition, (with M. McDuff and M. Monroe) published in 2015 by Oxford University Press. She has served on the Board of Governors of the Society for Conservation Biology and the North American Association for Environmental Education. She has received national awards from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for her research and teaching in natural resource management fields. Both venues will be connected via zoom and light lunch will be provided to attendees who RSVP to attend either in the Bankstown or the Kingswood campus; or you can zoom in remotely
