Description

The purpose of the conversation is to discuss the importance on why classroom talk is a crucial aspect in the classroom learning environment. Through dialogic pedagogies, educators will guide learners to think in ways that are imaginative, creative, interpretative and critical. These qualities are directly linked to Objective C in the NSW English Syllabus. I will also share video recorded work samples on how it looks in my classroom and the positive results. In addition, the conversation will explore how teachers could run this in their classrooms by using strategies I currently use. If time permits, participants will be involved in a mock lesson to experience first-hand how dialogic pedagogies could work in the classroom. This Educational Conversation is presented by Daniel Yong, who is currently in his fourth year of teaching at a low socio economic school in South-West Sydney. In 2015 he completed his Master of Teaching degree at Western Sydney University. During his first year of teaching, Daniel was targeted to participate in an action research project with the Primary English Teaching Association of Australia (PETAA) and Charles Sturt University on how dialogic pedagogies could enhance student learning outcomes in literacy. In his second year of teaching (2016), he received an Ultimo Operational Directorate Principals Network Award for ‘Significant Achievement’ as an early career teacher. Daniel currently leads dialogic pedagogies in his school and is hoping to branch out to other networks. In addition, he is currently working with Professor Paul Dufficy and EAL/D specialist, Cindy Valdez-Adams, on a vocabulary project that will equip teachers with the necessary understanding and tools to target EAL/D students to learn new words in a meaningful way.
