Western Sydney University appoints Pro Vice-Chancellor, Research

Newly appointed PVC Research, Professor Ian Anderson

Western Sydney University is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Ian Anderson as its new Pro Vice-Chancellor, Research.

Professor Anderson has led the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment (HIE) as its inaugural director since it was established in 2011.

Under his leadership HIE rapidly secured its reputation for research excellence. It is now recognised as one of the world’s leading research institutes for terrestrial ecology and climate change sciences.

In his capacity as Director of the National Vegetable Protected Cropping Centre, Professor Anderson has also championed research, education and partnership outcomes for the Australian Horticulture sector.

Professor Deborah Sweeney, Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Enterprise and Global), welcomed Professor Anderson’s appointment.

“Professor Ian Anderson’s experience in driving cross-institutional collaboration has contributed to the University being recognised as a world leader in agricultural research and food security,” said Professor Sweeney.

“His leadership has helped steer teams of researchers to be successful in large-scale research initiatives including the CRC for Future Food Systems and the Australian Research Council Training Centre for Smart and Sustainable Horticulture.

“He has also been instrumental in leading our work in India including establishing research and education partnerships.

“Professor Anderson’s appointment as Pro Vice Chancellor, Research marks an exciting next chapter for the University in terms of our international profile and research impact, and I look forward to working with him in achieving the University’s future ambitions.”

Professor Anderson said it has been an absolute privilege to lead the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment over the past 14 years.

“I feel the time is right to pass on the baton to the next leader of this wonderful research institute,” said Professor Anderson.

“I am so excited to start in the role of PVC Research and to work with Western’s wonderful researchers to help realise its future research ambitions and further the University’s reputation for conducting research that has real-world impact for the communities we serve.”
