Western Researchers named on 2023 Highly Cited List

Western Sydney University researchers have been named on the 2023 Clarivate list of Highly Cited Researchers. The prestigious list identifies scientists and social scientists who have demonstrated significant and broad influence in their field of research over the past decade.

Professor Deborah Sweeney, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Enterprise and International), congratulated the 6 Western researchers and 2 affiliate researchers on the 2023 list.

“These researchers are true innovators in their fields. Their work reflects Western’s sustained research excellence as well as a supportive research culture fostering challenge-centric codesigned research that translates into real impact on the communities they serve. Congratulations to all named on this highly prestigious list,” said Professor Sweeney.

The University’s highly cited researchers for 2023 are:

Plant and Animal Science

  • Distinguished Professor Belinda Medlyn (Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment)
  • Associate Professor Brendan Choat (Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment)
  • Professor Ian Wright (Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment)
  • Professor Zhong-Hua Chen (School of Science) first appearance on the list

Environment and Ecology

  • Professor Brajesh Singh (Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment)
  • Professor Peter Reich (affiliate, Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment)

Engineering

  • Distinguished Professor Wei-Xing Zheng (School of Computer, Data and Mathematical Sciences)

Psychiatry and Psychology

  • Dr Joseph Firth (affiliate, NICM Health Research Institute)

Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers list uses analysis to identify individuals from across the globe who have demonstrated significant and broad influence in their chosen field, with the preliminary list drawn from the highly cited papers that rank in the top 1 per cent by citations for field and publication year in the Web of Science citation index over the past decade.

This year’s list recognised 6,849 researchers from more than 67 countries.
