Species Survey

The Hawkesbury-Nepean River is rich with all types of life. As part of our first report card we used a short online community survey to ask locals what animals they have seen in and along the Hawkesbury-Nepean River, specifically between Yarramundi and Sackville in the last 12 months.

Our Findings

We recorded 82 survey responses between December 2021- February 2022. The survey recorded responses as far reaching as Penrith to Dangar Island, however, only responses between the area of focus have been presented below (with a snapshot available on our report card). The majority of locals identified these animals while walking, while some were doing water-based activities such as fishing, kayaking or swimming. These are the animals that were reportedly seen by the community:

• Echidna
• Eastern Water Dragon
• Eel
• Eagle, in particular Sea Eagle
• Kangaroo
• Pelican
• Frog, in particular Green Tree Frog
• Red Belly Black Snake
• Long Neck Turtle
• Brown Snake
• Bass and Mullet
• Platypus
• Wallaby
• Flying Fox
• White Ibis
• Duck
• Purple Swamp Hen
• Introduced species such as Rabbits, Foxes, Deer, Geese and Carp
