JEDSI Principles
Justice, Equity, Diversity and Social Inclusion (JEDSI) Principles and Objectives
The Hawkesbury-Nepean Waterkeerper Alliance is committed to supporting the principles of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Social Inclusion across all its activities. In our work to build a community voice for the river we will:
1. Promote Justice: Ensure equitable access, representation and benefit for all communities along the Hawkesbury-Nepean River, addressing historical disparities, advocating for fair distribution of resources and embracing the knowledges of the First Nations communities who have held a deep and continuous connection with the river for thousands of years. We do this by:
- Empowering First Nations professionals and leaders involvement in governance and delivery of initiatives through meaningful engagement and partnerships and by ensuring ancestral perspectives are taken into consideration.
- Undertaking community engagement activities regularly which encourage individual and group feedback, consultation and education through a citizen science lens.
2. Embrace Diversity and Inclusion: Celebrate and respect the diverse cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives of stakeholders involved in conservation efforts across the Hawkesbury-Nepean, fostering an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to participate. We do this by:
- Establishing and supporting our Friends of the Waterkeeper Alliance (FoWA) network which invites membership from all interested stakeholders and encourages and facilitates active conversations about the ongoing health and enlivenment of the Hawkesbury-Nepean River.
- Sharing, incorporating and learning from the diverse range of perspectives gained from the extended Hawkesbury-Nepean Waterkeeper Alliance membership.
3. Advance Equity: Implement policies and initiatives that prioritise equity in decision-making processes related to water management and environmental custodianship, striving for fairness and justice in all aspects of our work. We do this by:
- Ensuring member organisations values and policy frameworks align with the core HNWA values around justice, equity, diversity and social inclusion.
- For the purposes of HNWA activities, projects and partnerships, operate in alignment with the administering organisations (Western Sydney University) JEDSI related policy frameworks, including the Gender Equity Policy, Equal Opportunity Policy, Disability Policy, Procurement Policy and other relevant frameworks.
