Regalia

After you have registered on the day you will be fitted with your regalia by University staff members. See below for examples of our University regalia and the colour of your regalia hood.

Please note, hired regalia must be returned no later than 1 hour after the conclusion of your ceremony.

Dress code

All graduands must wear full regalia provided by Western Sydney University. Due to the formal nature of regalia, we recommend you wear smart attire to your graduation ceremony. Thongs/sandals, t-shirts and casual attire are not recommended. If wearing heels, you should bring them with you when you're fitted for your academic gown to make sure your gown is the right length.

The University welcomes religious attire whether traditional or cultural, just be mindful that regalia needs to sit comfortably over the top.  This includes the wearing of the trencher over head dress.

Having regalia mailed

If you are not attending your graduation you can still purchase regalia and have it sent to you after the ceremony round. Go to the Onestop payment system and select to purchase your regalia, then select the items you wish to purchase and also include the 'Postage' cost.

Using already owned regalia

You are able to bring your own regalia to graduation provided it complies with Western Sydney University regalia standards and it is used in graduations for the award which you will be conferred with (i.e. Bachelor, Masters, PhD).

If you plan to bring your own regalia you must contact the Graduation Team to confirm compliance with Western Sydney University regalia standards. If it does not comply with our standards, then you will not be permitted to wear it at the graduation ceremony and you will be required to pay for the hire of regalia on the day.

Examples of regalia

Undergraduate regalia

Undergraduate regalia

The regalia worn by our graduates comprises a black Cambridge undergraduate gown, a black cloth trencher (hat) and either a stole or a hood with the colour appropriate to the discipline. You should wear the trencher (hat) squarely on your head and not at an angle. The tassel should hang to the right side of the trencher.

A stole is worn by graduates with certificates, associate diplomas and diplomas and is depicted by the amount of stripes on the stole. The graduate diploma stole has three stripes in the appropriate colour. Graduate certificate stoles have two stripes in the appropriate colour. Diploma stoles have one stripe in the appropriate colour.

Graduates with a bachelors degree wear a hood of black exterior fabric with a silk trim in the appropriate colour.

Regalia hood

A hood is a component of your regalia which is separate to your gown. Hoods are colour appropriate to your discipline. Please see the below table 'Regalia hoods' to find your discipline and colour.

Regalia trencher

A trencher is a kind of cap with a close-fitting crown surmounted by a stiff, flat, cloth-covered, square piece. The black cloth trencher is worn by Bachelor and Masters degree graduands.
