Three Minute Thesis (3MT)

What is 3MT?

Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is a competition that celebrates the exciting research conducted by higher degree research students. It is a skills development opportunity that challenges students to explain their research project to a non-specialist audience in three minutes using only one slide.

Why should I participate in 3MT?

3MT is a great way to showcase your research project to a whole new audience and engage with your colleagues at Western Sydney University and the wider research community.

There are also cash prizes for the winners of the 3MT finals:

  • Winner $2,000
  • Runner Up $1,000
  • People's Choice $500

The 3MT competition also supports you in developing your capacity to effectively explain your research in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience.

How can I get involved?

Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD), Professional Doctorate, Master of Philosophy and Master of Research (2nd Year) candidates can get involved in 3MT by registering for the qualifying round hosted by your School or Institute. If you are not a higher degree research student, you can still participate in 3MT by being part of the audience at one of the qualifying rounds in your School or Institute or by coming along to the finals. Audience members also have the opportunity to cast their vote for the people's choice award!

Talk to the HDR Director in your School or Institute or contact the Graduate Research School for more information.
