Online Global Learning programs are exciting opportunities available for you to access international experiences without having to leave home. You can still gain meaningful intercultural exposure, learn from different academic staff, enhance your career prospects by working remotely in prestigious organisations around the world, and in many case you can receive academic credit towards your degree by attending online global learning programs.

Types of Experiences

There are different types of online global learning programs available to Western Sydney University students. Choose the one(s) that better suit your needs and expectations.

Units at Partner Universities

  • Semester Programs
    • Study three or four international units and develop your intercultural skills without having to leave your home.
    • This type of online global learning experience is similar to a traditional semester exchange program, however, the content is fully delivered online and you will complete the program from home. No travel required.

  • Short-term Programs
    • Study one or two international units and develop your intercultural skills without having to leave your home.
    • This type of online global learning experience is similar to a traditional short-term program, however, the content is fully delivered online and you will complete the program from home. No travel required.
    • Please note that some online short-term programs are offered as ‘exchange’ while some are offered as ‘study abroad’. Unless it is declared that the program is 'Exchange', it will be a Study Abroad program.
    • Programs provided by CISaustralia, ISA, ACICIS, Project Everest, People and Friends, Hacker Exchange and many of the providers are 'Study Abroad'. If you are participating in a Study Abroad program, you pay a PROGRAM FEE to the host organisation or university. Depending on the program, the fee may cover tuition fees (1-2 units), accommodation, meals, excursions, airport pick up, local travel (please check with the individual program to see what it covers).

Internships across the World

  • Improve your career outcomes without having to leave your home by gaining experience and insights with global organisations such as the United Nations, Google, Facebook, YouTube, Porsche, Dolce & Gabbana and more.
  • This type of online global learning experience is similar to a traditional international work experience program, however, you will complete the internships remotely. No travel required.

Innovative Programs

  • Innovative programs combine academic studies, experiential learning, mentoring, work experiences, volunteering and entrepreneurship in a virtual journey around different parts of the world.
  • This type of online global learning experience is quite unique and it suits the needs the minds of innovators, entrepreneurs, influencers and disruptors of the modern world. The content is fully delivered online and you will complete the program from home. No travel required.

Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL)

  • COIL is the co-development of a shared syllabus by two or more instructors from universities geographically apart. This option of online global learning program is currently being develop by Western Sydney University academic staff and it will be available for students as part of your degree soon.
  • COIL is an innovative way to engage students in a shared, online multicultural and collaborative learning environment.

Why should I participate in a online global learning experience?

We know many students were planning and hoping to undertake overseas study opportunities in 2020 and now can’t due to COVID-19 and are looking for other opportunities to gain new perspectives and skills which can enhance their personal development and employability. These experiences provide an opportunity to gain real life experience and insights from leading organisations such as the United Nations, the Leonardo di Caprio Foundation, Google, Facebook, YouTube, Make-A-Wish, Porsche, Boeing, Dolce & Gabbana, and many more.

Who can participate?

  • These opportunities have been designed for university students.
    • For eligibility requirements, see the program information above or consult with the program provider
    • For academic recognition, some opportunities have been designed for academic credit and some have not. To find out more, see "Will I receive academic recognition?" below.

What types of experiences are available?

There are 3 main types of virtual international experiences: 1. Semester or short-term programs with Partner Universities, 2. Online Internships and 3. Innovative Programs. Some experiences are designed for Academic Credit, where others are designed as a life experience that you can add to your resume. To find out more, visit the provider websites above.

When can I participate in a online global learning experience?

You are free to apply for a Virtual Experience today. All of the experiences have different start and finish times. If you are interested in an opportunity, however it is at the wrong time, contact the overseas provider and ask about future programs you may be able to participate in.

Will I receive academic recognition?

  • This depends on the experience. Some opportunities have been designed for academic credit, some have not. To receive academic credit for a virtual international experience, it is important that you seek advice from your Academic Course Advisor (ACA) or Director of Academic Program (DAP) about credit arrangements and how it fits best with your course structure. To find out more about your ACA or DAP, see 'Contact Us' on relevant School website.
  • How to Apply for Credit.
    • 1. Obtain or request credit information from the program provider (see above). Depending on the activity, the information should include the Name of the Program, ObjectiveNumber of Hours, any Text Books Used and Methods of Assessment.
    • 2. Complete the Overseas Academic Approval Form (non-exchange) and provide supporting documentation about your course to your Academic Course Advisor (ACA) or Director of Academic Program (DAP)
    • On completion of the experience, apply for Advanced Standing for recognition of your studies
