New Colombo Plan Opportunities

The New Colombo Plan is a signature initiative of the Australian Government which aims to lift knowledge of the Indo-Pacific in Australia by supporting Australian undergraduates to study and undertake internships in the region.  The Australian Government wants study and work-based experiences in the Indo-Pacific to become a rite of passage for young Australian undergraduate students. Eligible students selected for an opportunity below will be supported by a $3000 New Colombo Plan Mobility grant  and may  be  eligible to receive a deferred OS-HELP loan valued up to $8,149 (conditions apply).


China Market Research Study Tour

Dates: Sunday 5th - Saturday 18th January 2020 (returning Sunday 19th January)

This study tour offers 10 students an opportunity to gain exposure to the business practices of Australia’s biggest trading partner, China. By undertaking company visits in Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou, students will be able to engage in research activities to gain insight to the Chinese consumer market. Students will develop research skills which can be applied in the real research world. Students will learn and experience Chinese culture through Chinese language and culture classes at Junan University, and via interactions with local students and communities. Throughout the study tour, students will visit famous tourist sites including the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square, the Temple of Heaven, the Great Wall of China (Mutianyu section), the Humble Administrator’s Garden, Suzhou Museum, Zhujiajiao Watertown, Shanghai Tower, West Lake, and Lin Yin Temple and Tea Garden.

Hong Kong Study Tour (2 weeks)

Enterprise Innovation & Entrepreneurial Practice

Dates: Sunday 5th - Saturday 18th January 2020 (returning Sunday 19th January)

The program provides an opportunity for undergraduate students to embark on a 2-week study tour of the business start-up and entrepreneurial ecosystem in Hong Kong. Funded by the Australian Government’s New Colombo Plan, the focus is on innovative business approaches. Students will engage with entrepreneurial business owners and managers to explore local attitudes and approaches to contemporary business practices under the guidance of an academic mentor from the School of Business. The study tour will be completed in conjunction with the capstone engagement unit in the undergraduate Business program 200568 Contemporary Management Issues.

Indonesia Business Professional Practicum (BPP)

Dates: January each year (6 weeks)

This program was developed with support from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s New Colombo Plan. The BPP runs for six weeks in Indonesia, including a two-week intensive Indonesian language study and industry-led seminars at Atma Jaya University, followed by a four-week supervised industry placement. The program runs from early January to mid-February each year.

India Study Tour (2 weeks)

Dates: December 2019

This two-week tour will provide 20 Undergraduate business students with an opportunity to experience Advanced Experiential Learning and build their employability and networking skills. This tour will give them international experience, make them more job ready and help them grow in their profession through visits to Indian innovative businesses and institutions such as Google Bangalore, Accenture labs, Arya startup (Artificial Intelligence), Lowe Innovation Labs, TeamIndus (Axiom Research Labs, an aerospace company) and Bombay Stock Exchange Institute.

Vietnam Internship

Dates: flexible until Jan 2020 (6 weeks)

The Vietnam Immersion Experience offers 10 students the opportunity to gain exposure to life as an expatriate by working and living in Vietnam for a period of six to eight weeks. Students will receive mentorship from senior management within their host organisation as they participate in a structured work placement program that will highlight the accessibility of working in the Indo-Pacific region.

China Work-Integrated Learning Experience

Dates: 19 to 30 November 2019

Are you ready to embark on a life-changing journey to discover and cultivate your skills as a professional? Students enrolled in 200919: Innovation and Professional Practice in Spring 2018 will have the opportunity to embark on a ten-day visit to Xiamen University. You will apply Design Thinking to innovatively solve a business problem specific to a successful Chinese business by directly interacting with them during the visit. This is an excellent opportunity to link new knowledge on innovation and professional practice with applications in the business sector within an emerging economy.

Other Opportunities

Bank of Beirut Internship (July 19)

An opportunity to intern in the head office of a international bank in Lebanon for a period of 4 weeks and 4 weeks of work related activities back in Sydney. You will visit the Cedars of Lebanon, climb the stairs of Harissa, walk the old steps of Byblos, and have dinners in the old town of Batroun. Go Global Exchange Program

One of our cornerstone Go Global opportunities is the semester or year-long study opportunity, the Go Global Exchange Program. If you want to immerse yourself in another diverse culture (but getting the option to study units completely in English) then one or two sessions abroad as part of your Western degree could be perfect for you. To support the participation in overseas semester and year-long exchange, eligible students can receive an International Exchange Scholarship of AUD $1,750 and a deferred OS-HELP loan valued up to AUD $7,700.
