How do I participate?


STEP 1: Research an opportunity below and submit your application

  • Explore what experience you would like to add to your degree by researching 'Overseas Opportunities' below:
    • You may be able to replace one of these activities with an Elective unit
    • English is the medium of instruction at most of the locations
    • The opportunities below are offered in July, which is summer in the Northern Hemisphere.
  • Submit your application to the preferred institution or provider
    • Exchange Partner locations: please submit an Expression of Interest (opens in a new window) to Western Sydney University at least 3 months prior to commencement.
    • Study Abroad locations: please submit your application directly to the program provider. Opportunities are available in most disciplines world-wide.

STEP 2: Apply for Academic Approval

STEP 3: Apply for OS-HELP

  • You may be eligible for OS-HELP, a deferred HELP debt loan for undergraduate Australian citizens - loans of $4,000, $6,791 and $8,149 are available. Academic Approval is required; have completed 80 credit points of study, and have 10 credit points remaining on return.

STEP 4: Complete the 'Before I Go' Online Checklist

  • Complete the Online Checklist to ensure you have completed the important tasks before heading overseas. This includes applying for a Student Mobility Travel Grant and information about travel insurance.

What is Study Abroad?

  • Students pay a PROGRAM FEE to the host organisation or university. Depending on the program, the fee may cover tuition fees (1-2 units), accommodation, meals, excursions, airport pick up, local travel (please check with the individual program to see what it covers).
  • The cost of a program may be offset by OS-HELP, a deferred HELP debt loan for undergraduate Australian citizens up to $8,149
  • $500 Student Mobility Travel Grants are currently available for these opportunities

What is Exchange?

  • Students do not pay TUITION FEES to their host University but enrol and continue to pay their fees to Western Sydney University (ie. upfront or through HECS 1-2 units).
  • Exchange students pay an ADMIN FEE to the host university. Depending on the program, the fee may cover accommodation, meals, excursions, airport pick up, local travel (please check with the individual program to see what it covers).
  • The cost of a program may be offset by OS-HELP, a deferred HELP debt loan for undergraduate Australian citizens up to $8,149.
  • $500 Student Mobility Travel Grants are currently available for these opportunities

Study Tours and Special Opportunities

A study tour provides a group of students with the opportunity to combine study and cultural immersion, by taking the lessons out of the classroom and into another country. These are often lead by Western Sydney staff. Study tours usually run between 2-4 weeks and offer your the opportunity to gain academic credit towards yours degree. Some of these opportunities attract scholarships and New Colombo Plan Mobility Program grants. Find out more.


International Work Experience

Boost your resume with a hands-on experience while working and living overseas. Many degrees at Western provide an opportunity to participate in domestic or international work experience. Semester Exchange Studies

One of our cornerstone Go Global opportunities is the semester or year-long study opportunity, the Go Global Exchange Program. If you want to immerse yourself in another diverse culture (but getting the option to study units completely in English) then one or two sessions abroad as part of your Western degree could be perfect for you. To support the participation in overseas semester and year-long exchange, eligible students can receive an International Exchange Scholarship of up to AUD $2,500 and a deferred OS-HELP loan valued up to AUD $8,149.
