Improve the awareness of gastrointestinal motility disorders to Australians, through education, translational research and support
The Gut Motility Unit had its beginnings in 2011 with the appointment of Dr Vincent Ho as academic gastroenterologist to the School of Medicine, University of Western Sydney. Dr Ho has a passion for the management of gastrointestinal functional and motility disorders (many of these conditions are detailed on this site) and the use of the latest investigations to evaluate the physiology of the gut. Two specialist diagnostic gastrointestinal physiology clinics were established in 2011 for patients in the Greater Western Sydney region (at Blacktown and Camden Hospitals). These investigations are accessible for patients in the Greater Western Sydney region as they are bulk-billed services and quality reports are provided for referring specialists.
In line with the development of new clinical services has been the rise of a new research team in the School of Medicine. The research mission statement of the Gut Motility Network is to "advance the field of understanding and treatment of gastrointestinal motility disorders through basic and clinical scientific research beginning with the people of Greater Western Sydney".
Research into gastrointestinal motility disorders is challenging and the Gut Motility Network draws upon the expertise of a number of multidisciplinary collaborators including psychologists, surgeons, and dietitians. We are actively exploring a number of different areas including the effects of transcutaneous electrical stimulation on functional gut disorders, food rheology in swallowing, analyses of 3-dimensional high resolution manometry and creating intestinal organoids in the laboratory. Our research program has significantly accelerated with the appointment in early 2014 of Dr Jerry Zhou as postdoctoral research fellow in translational gastroenterology.
The Gut Motility Network has grown to incorporate community engagement and promotion of gut motility disorders as core themes through the invaluable work of Ms Jenny Greer. This website is part of our engagement strategy to connect to patients and their families as well as disseminate to the broader community relevant information about gastrointestinal motility and functional disorders.
