Personality: Martha Betts

Martha Betts (1811 – 1895) had very close links to the Protestant Orphan School. Not only was she one the longest serving Matron of the school, serving for almost 25 years between 1851 and 1875, she was the youngest daughter of Samuel Marsden who was one of the founding figures of the school. Her husband Josiah served as Master of the school until his death in 1863, after which her son Edward became the school’s Master.
