Supervision in SABEL

Supervision is central to the HDR experience in SABEL. In addition to ensuring steady progress, a strong supervisory relationship supports the development of high-quality research and a positive candidature experience.

This page outlines what candidates and supervisors can expect, and how supervision is approached across the Faculty.

Information for prospective candidates about identifying potential supervisors and research fit can be found on the Higher Degree Research in SABEL page.

The Role of Supervision

Supervision is a collaborative process. It involves regular engagement, constructive feedback, and shared responsibility for maintaining progress and research quality.

Throughout your candidature, your supervisory panel will support you in developing and refining your research project, building your skills in research, analysis, and writing, maintaining momentum and meeting key milestones, and preparing your work for submission and examination.

What Candidates Can Expect

As an HDR candidate in SABEL, you can expect:

  • Regular meetings with your supervisor(s)
  • Constructive and timely feedback on your work
  • Guidance on research design, methods, and writing
  • Support in preparing for key stages of candidature, including submission and examination

Supervision should provide both intellectual guidance and practical support, helping you develop as an independent researcher.

What Is Expected of Candidates

A successful supervisory relationship depends on active engagement from both sides.

As a candidate, you are expected to:

  • Take responsibility for the direction and progress of your research
  • Prepare work for discussion and feedback
  • Respond constructively to feedback
  • Maintain regular communication with your supervisor(s)
  • Seek support early if challenges arise

Working Effectively Together

A strong supervisory relationship is built on clear communication, mutual respect, and shared expectations.

To support this, we recommend:

  • Agreeing on meeting frequency and modes of communication early
  • Setting clear expectations for feedback and turnaround times
  • Maintaining open and respectful communication
  • Reviewing progress regularly

Establishing good working practices early in candidature will help ensure a productive and positive experience.

If Issues Arise

Most supervisory relationships work well, but challenges can occasionally arise.

If you have concerns, it is important to address them early. Where appropriate, you should raise them with your supervisor(s) in the first instance. You can also seek advice from your School’s Director, HDR and Honours, and further support is available through the SABEL HDR team if needed.

Addressing issues early helps ensure they can be resolved effectively.

A Shared Commitment

Supervision in SABEL is based on a shared commitment to high-quality research, respectful collaboration, and successful completion.

By working together, candidates and supervisors contribute to a supportive and intellectually vibrant research environment.
