Doctoral Internship Program

The Faculty awards up to ten Doctoral Internship Grants, each valued at $10,000, through each funding round. Grants are awarded on a competitive basis and may be used to support reasonable costs associated with undertaking the internship, including travel, living expenses, and other approved costs.

The program is open to doctoral candidates enrolled in a PhD, Doctor of Creative Arts (DCA), or Doctor of Education (EdD) within SABEL. Applicants must have the support of their Principal Supervisor and undertake an approved internship with an eligible research end-user outside the higher education sector.

Internships must be completed before the conferral of the doctoral degree and comply with all relevant University requirements. Preference may be given to candidates who have successfully completed Confirmation of Candidature and demonstrate strong potential for research impact and external engagement.

Supported internships must involve genuine research or research and development activities that are aligned with the candidate's field of research. Internships are undertaken with an eligible external research end-user, must comprise at least 60 full-time equivalent days over a minimum period of three months, and be completed before thesis submission or degree conferral.

Internship arrangements must also be agreed in writing within 18 months (full-time equivalent) of commencing candidature. Depending on the project, the internship may contribute directly to the candidate's research or involve a separate research project that draws on their disciplinary expertise.

Host organisations may include government agencies, businesses, professional associations, arts and cultural organisations, community organisations, charities, and other external organisations that benefit from research expertise.

• Completed SDIP Application Form
• Written confirmation of support from the host organisation
• Endorsement from the Principal Supervisor
