Faculty of Social Sciences, Arts,
Business, Education and Law
The Faculty of Social Sciences, Arts, Business, Education and Law (SABEL) brings together disciplines that shape society: law, social sciences, business, arts and education.
SABEL brings together the disciplines that shape society: law, social sciences, business, arts and education. As the largest faculty within Western Sydney University, SABEL holds a unique responsibility and opportunity to influence positive change at scale. Our size allows us to reach diverse student cohorts, foster rich interdisciplinary collaboration, and build strong, sustained partnerships with communities, professions and industry.
Through this work, we are committed to developing graduates who understand complexity, value diversity, and are equipped to respond to real-world challenges. We prioritise learning that connects theory with practice, ensuring students have opportunities to engage with lived experience, applied research, and community-informed solutions throughout their studies.
Central to SABEL’s approach is meaningful engagement with the communities we serve. We aim to ensure that teaching, research and engagement activities are grounded in reciprocity, cultural respect and social responsibility. By working alongside community organisations, service providers and industry partners, we support outcomes that benefit students while also contributing to stronger, more resilient communities in Greater Western Sydney and beyond. This work is strengthened through the Whitlam Institute, based within SABEL, which advances evidence-informed public policy and civic leadership through research, dialogue and engagement with government, industry and community.
In alignment with Western Sydney University’s strategic commitment to strengthening student success, Indigenous acceleration, securing sustainability and global citizenship, SABEL contributes to the University’s role as a civic institution. Our work supports staff to create knowledge with purpose and to advance the public good, and for students to graduate as ethical professionals and community-minded leaders. We produce much needed lawyers, teachers, social workers, planners, police, accountants, counsellors, youth workers and critical thinkers.
