Learning & Teaching - Excellence in Teaching

Winner - Individual

Dr David Walton, Senior Lecturer, School of Humanities and Communication Arts

Dr Walton has been a key figure in the delivery of the International Relations and Asian Studies program at Western for many years. As the University has sought to internationalise the curriculum, the student body and the student experience more generally, Dr Walton has led from the front in developing a series of programs and partnerships with like-minded institutions in the Asian region, particularly in Japan. These programs include out-bound and in-bound study tours, student and academic exchanges, double degrees and international conferences and symposiums. Many of these specific programs would not have happened without Dr Walton's initiative and persistence in seeing them through to the point that they are now well established and have a certain momentum of their own.

In summary, Dr Walton has played an important role in advancing the University's internationalisation agenda. In doing so, he has helped to give many Western students their first experience of the wider world beyond Western Sydney. This is an invaluable experience that cannot be measured; once students' eyes have been opened to the many opportunities that await them, there is no turning back. Such programs help to make students more committed to doing well in their studies and eager to go on to further success in their careers. Dr Walton is playing an important role in quite literally "securing success" for our students and the University.
