Our Commitment – Nature Positive 2029

In late 2024 Western Sydney University pledged to become Nature Positive by 2029, joining the global Nature Positive Universities network, an initiative led by the United Nations and the University of Oxford. This pledge aligns with our target of Climate Positive and recognises the co-benefits of nature resilience with climate action.

By making this commitment Western recognises that Nature Positive is more than conserving and minimising harm to the environment, but that action is required to stop and then reverse biodiversity loss through our activities; contribute to building healthier and more resilient ecosystems; and that our supply chain aligns with ecological sustainability.

  • Biodiversity:  We're actively mapping the natural assets and biodiversity across our campuses to better understand, restore, and enhance local ecosystems and species diversity.
  • Indigenous Knowledge: We’re seeking partnerships with Indigenous land managers to incorporate culturally appropriate techniques to manage remnant bushland and build urban landscapes.
  • Regenerative Agriculture: We’re applying agroecological principles on the Hawkesbury Farm to management livestock production while restoring ecosystem services within the local landscape.
  • Urban Landscapes: Water Cycle Management
