Our Commitment - Climate Positive 2029
In November 2021, Western Sydney University became a signatory to the United Nations (UN) led Race to Zero Universities and Colleges, committing to ambitious targets of Carbon Neutral 2023, and Climate Positive 2029.
Along with Carbon Neutral certification by Climate Active since 2023, a 5 Year Carbon Transition Plan undertaken in 2023 provides high level emission reduction strategies relating to Scope 1 (fuels, natural gas and refrigerants), Scope 2 (electricity supply) and Scope 3 (supply and value chain emissions) consistent with international Greenhouse Gas Protocols.
Western is working towards a Climate Positive future through key initiatives in carbon neutrality, emissions reduction, and climate resilience.
- Carbon Neutral: Certified by Climate Active, we measure and offset our carbon footprint annually across Scopes 1, 2 and 3.
- Emissions Reduction: Our 5-Year Carbon Transition Plan focuses on electrification, renewable energy, and sustainable procurement.
- Electrification Roadmap: We're phasing out fossil fuels on campus with clean energy technologies and on-site renewables.
- Sustainable Procurement: We're embedding climate criteria in contracts and working with suppliers to reduce Scope 3 emissions.
- Climate Resilience: Aligned with the NSW Climate Ready program and global standards, we're assessing climate and nature-related risks and planning for long-term adaptation.
