Reimagining 3D Printing Waste

Western Sydney University's Teaching and Research Technical Services (TRTS) Engineering team is helping reduce plastic waste generated through 3D printing activities by giving materials a second life.

Led by Dr Tosin Famakinwa, Trevor Johnstone, Vincent Wozniak-O'Connor and Saif Tareq, the initiative transforms waste materials from student 3D printing projects into new products, demonstrating how circular economy principles can be applied in teaching, research and technical operations.

Turning waste into opportunity

Plastic waste generated through student projects is repurposed into useful products, including trophies for University presentations and recycled plastic sheet materials for student use. By giving materials a second life, the project reduces waste sent to landfill while supporting practical learning opportunities for students.

The initiative helps students explore sustainable design, engineering and manufacturing practices while demonstrating responsible resource management in action.

Results

Since 2024, the project has recovered and repurposed over 76 kilograms of plastic waste.

Recognition

In 2025, the Built Environment and Engineering Technical Team received a Vice-Chancellor's Excellence Award for Securing Sustainability. The project was recognised for reducing plastic waste, supporting circular economy outcomes and demonstrating sustainable practices in education, industry and society.
