Research Image Competition
Calling all researchers, visionaries, and creative minds –Western’s Research Image Competition is open for submissions! We’re calling on you, Western staff and students, to bring our research to life through images.
We are looking for images that tell a story about Western’s research, its impact and the people who make it happen. You don’t need to be a researcher, and the image does not need to explain the research being conducted, but rather intrigue, captivate and raise awareness about the research.
The winning entries from the 2024 Research Image Competition (see below for more details)
Staff and students from across the University are invited to enter the competition in 2025. Entries are encouraged from all disciplines and must be submitted under one of the themes in Western’s Global Challenge Program, which focuses on the world’s most complex challenges. Integral to Western’s Global Challenge Program is the understanding that First Nations knowledge and knowledge systems underpin all cross-disciplinary activities undertaken.

2024 Research Image Competition
Winner of the 2024 Open Category
Paul Kirkland from the International Centre for Neuromorphic Systems with his photograph, Satellites Significance: We Gaze Up, They Watch Over. The judges noted this image was fascinating, a sound illustration of the topic, and commented that the position of the camera and the way in which the terrain was illuminated, was both technically good and creative.
Runner up in the Open Category
Timon Ax, a student with the School of Medicine, with his photograph, Falling in Love with Science. The judges commented that this image captures real determination for research and the viewer gets a real feeling for the extreme environment experienced by the scientists during their work.
Winner of the AI Category
Rocco Cavaleri from the School of Health Sciences with his photograph, Brainsight: Shocking the System. The judges commented that this was a fantastic example of the value of using an authentic image as a base, and then utilising AI effectively in photography. They also noted that the image shows how AI can enable illustrators to access appropriate imagery that is fit for purpose without the use of stock imagery.
Winner of the People’s Choice Award
Emma Rich from the Division of Research, Enterprise and Global with her image, Resilience in Flames (an AI Category image).
