Need More Time or Missed a Class? We’re Here to Support You

We understand that unexpected situations can affect your ability to attend classes or complete assessments. If you’ve experienced illness, personal hardship, or caring responsibilities, you may be eligible for an extension or a Disruption to Studies provision—depending on how long and how significantly you’ve been impacted.

Extension or Missed Compulsory Teaching Activities

For short-term impacts (1–3 days), you can submit a request using the Apply for Extension or Disruption to Studies Provision form.

This applies when you:

  • Need extra time to complete an assignment, or
  • Missed a compulsory class or teaching activity

Key things to know:

  1. Applications must be received no later than 5:00pm two working days after the due date or date of the compulsory teaching activity.
  1. Supporting documents is optional for extensions under 3 days but may be requested later.
  1. It is in your best interests to keep working on your assessment or attend your classes where possible.
  1. Check your Subject Outline for assessment due dates and compulsory activities. For more support or questions, contact Student Services Hub or speak with your Subject Coordinator.

Automatic Extensions (Applicable From 30 June 2025)

If you meet the criteria and apply for an assessment extension for an individual assessment:

  • You’ll receive an automatic 3-day extension (except for assessments listed in the sections below)
  • Students in College modular programs will receive a 2-day automatic extension
  • You can only get one automatic extension per subject – any others will need approval from your Subject Coordinator

Some assessments need special review. Even if your situation fits the criteria, your request will be reviewed by your Subject Coordinator if your assessment is a:

  • Debate
  • Interview
  • Participation or Presentation
  • Professional Placement or Simulation
  • Viva Voce (oral exam)
  • Group assessment

If you're requesting to reschedule a final, end-of-session, practical, or practical exam, you may need to apply for a Deferred Exam. Visit the Deferred Exams page or check the Examinations Policy for more information.

If Your Request Is Not Approved:

  • You may lose marks for each calendar day your assessment is late if it’s not submitted on time.
  • You may receive a Fail grade if you miss a compulsory class or activity that is required to pass the subject.

Make sure to review the Assessment Policy for full details on how late penalties and attendance requirements are applied.

Disruption to Studies (DTS) Provision

Sometimes serious and unexpected situations can affect your ability to study or complete assessments. If this happens and the disruption lasts more than 3 days, you may be eligible to apply for a Disruption to Studies Provision.

A Disruption to Studies Provision recognises that you have been impacted by a Disruption to Studies Event by allowing you to complete an additional or alternate opportunity to demonstrate that you meet the relevant Subject Learning Outcomes. This may be:

  • completing a different, academically equivalent assessment task,
  • being exempted from an assessment item,
  • having an extension granted, or
  • being awarded a mark based on the average mark for all other completed assessment tasks that you have completed.

Late Applications

You may be able to submit a late application if you experienced extenuating circumstances that prevented you from applying on time.

To be considered, you must provide documentary evidence explaining the reason for the delay. Without appropriate evidence, your application will not be accepted.

For more details on acceptable documentation, please refer to the Supporting Documentation page.

If It Affects a Final Exam

Disruption to Studies (DTS) does not apply for a missed final exam. If you have been approved for a Deferred Exam but then miss the scheduled exam due to a serious and unexpected event, you may be eligible to apply for a Disruption to Studies (DTS).

Eligibility Criteria for Disruption to Studies (DTS)

You may be eligible to apply for a Disruption to Studies Provision if you’ve experienced a serious, unexpected event that was outside your control and has affected your ability to study or complete assessments for three or more days. This is called a Disruption to Studies Event.

A Disruption to Studies Event is a serious and unavoidable event that significantly affects your ability to study or complete assessments. It must meet all the following conditions:

  • Caused by health issues, trauma, bereavement, hardship, or unavoidable circumstances outside your control
  • Could not reasonably have been predicted or avoided
  • Seriously disrupted your ability to study or complete an assessment
  • Lasted more than three (3) days

Note: Ongoing challenges (like chronic illness or disability) are generally managed through an Academic Reasonable Adjustment Plan (ARAP) and not through Disruption to Studies.

Accepted Reasons

Not Accepted Reasons

Misreading your Learning Guide or exam timetable

Trauma or sudden hardship

Not having the right equipment or space for an online exam

Supporting Documentation

You must upload an electronic copy of all supporting documents with your application. Hard copy documents will not be accepted. If you only have physical copies, please scan them and attach the digital files to your online form.

All supporting documents must be submitted at the time of application.

You must retain the original or a certified copy of all submitted documents for at least one year. The University may check applications and contact you at any time within that year to request verification.

Submitting documents that have been altered or manipulated will be referred for investigation under the Student Misconduct Rule.

For more details on acceptable documentation, please refer to the Supporting Documentation page.

Academic Reasonable Adjustment Plan (ARAP) and Disruption to Studies

An Academic Reasonable Adjustment Plan (ARAP) is designed to support you in managing the effects of a disability or health condition while continuing your studies.

If you have an ARAP, you may only apply for a Disruption to Studies provision if:

  • Your condition worsens significantly, making you unfit to attend class, complete assessments, or sit an exam,
  • The increased impact affects your studies for three or more days, and
  • You meet the general eligibility criteria for Disruption to Studies.

Please note: Having a chronic condition alone does not qualify you for a Disruption to Studies application.

You may apply for Disruption to Studies in the following circumstances:

  • The issue is unrelated to your disability or health condition (e.g. bereavement, motor vehicle accident),
    or
  • Your symptoms became significantly worse and could not be reasonably managed through your ARAP adjustments,
    and
  • You provide additional supporting documentation beyond your ARAP.

Providing a copy of your ARAP alone is not sufficient evidence for a Disruption to Studies application.
