QILT

Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching

The Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching (QILT) are a suite of national surveys run in universities and other higher education institutions. The QILT results help us to improve learning and teaching at Western while benchmarking our performance against other institutions. The surveys cover the student life cycle from the first year of study at university to finding employment after graduation.

The QILT surveys are funded by the Australian Government Department of Education and run by the Social Research Centre. The results are publicly available on the ComparED website.

Student Experience Survey (SES)

The SES is a survey of current commencing and completing students run in August each year. The survey asks students about many facets of their study experience, including skills development, learner engagement, teaching quality, student support, learning resources and more. The results give Western and the Government insight into students' experiences to help monitor and improve teaching and learning in Australia.

Graduate Outcomes Survey (GOS)

The GOS is a survey of recent graduates three to six months after completion of their studies. The GOS collects information on our graduates’ short-term employment outcomes and further study activities.

Within the GOS, the Course Experience Questionnaire (CEQ) allows students to provide feedback on their study experiences at Western, including teaching quality, skills improvement and overall satisfaction.

The Postgraduate Research Experience Questionnaire (PREQ) is also part of the GOS and targets all graduating students who have completed research degrees. It evaluates areas including supervision, intellectual climate, skills development, infrastructure, thesis examination, clarity of goals and overall satisfaction.

Graduate Outcomes Survey – Longitudinal (GOS-L)

The GOS-L supplements the GOS by collecting information on the employment outcomes of graduates three years after graduation. The results show how employment status and salary can change for graduates over time.

Employer Satisfaction Survey (ESS)

When completing the GOS, graduates are invited to provide their employer’s contact details. The ESS then seeks feedback from graduates’ supervisors on the generic skills, technical skills and work readiness of Western graduates. The results indicate the quality of Western’s education in preparing students for the workforce.
