Bystander Anti-Racism Training

Bystander anti-racism is action taken by ordinary people in response to incidents of interpersonal or systemic racism.

Our Bystander Anti-Racism Training packages are designed to meet the needs of diverse stakeholders in addressing and preventing challenges that can arise when diversity is not well managed. The training focuses on understanding and identifying racism as well as evidence based strategies to counter racist incidents that take place in personal, work and public settings. Testimonials

The Challenging Racism Project at Western Sydney University has been influential in shaping research and thinking on anti-racism. The Australian Human Rights Commission's 'Racism. It Stops with Me' campaign, our national anti-racism initiative, has drawn on the findings of the project. I can attest that Professor Kevin Dunn and Western Sydney University are leaders in the field – in theory and in practice.

The 2015 Western Sydney University's Bystander anti- racism pilot project successfully demonstrated the positive effects of an institution engaging with its staff at a grass roots level. In particular the staff workshops run as part of the project produced positive results in the evaluations that followed. Attendees' attitudes towards and understanding of racism markedly improved after attending the training. At Western Sydney University, equity and inclusiveness are part of our strategic values and engaging with our staff through mechanisms like the bystander anti- racism training help to cement that strategic direction and deliver positive outcomes on the ground.

Western's 'Challenging Racism Project' conducted bystander anti- racism training for our 10 community coaches working across the Wanderers programs in November 2014. The coaches were successfully trained in developing skills and strategies to counter racism that could be exchanged among children participating in Western Sydney school football clinics. We co-developed effective messaging that "racism is not okay"' and how children and adults across Western Sydney should take a stand against racism by not getting involved in bad behaviour, respecting differences in people and cultures and not calling other people names. Our news story featured Wanderers player Yianna Perkatis and received excellent exposure..
