Abstract
Compliance with the built environment involves multiple disciplines and expertise; hence, numerous building codes and regulations are considered by design experts in different disciplines. The Australian Building Codes Board has established a comprehensive framework of building codes and regulations in Australia to ensure the safety and utility standards of occupants during construction and throughout the lifecycle of buildings. However, the human expert-based building code compliance checking process is resource-intensive and error-prone. The cost of non-compliance in Australian buildings is estimated to be around AUD 2.5 billion per year. Automated compliance checking software tools are available for buildings at the design stage based on BIM designs. However, the automation of compliance assurance during the construction stage has yet to be addressed. The application of artificial intelligence (AI) in construction is a fast-growing sector, focusing especially on machine learning and deep learning technologies. The application of AI in construction has concentrated on object recognition and detection, cost estimation and prediction, productivity estimation, safety enhancement, machine tracking and identification, damage detection and identification, and interpretation of construction documents. This research focuses on the automation of compliance checking for buildings during the construction stage. A deep learning-based prototype will be developed with an integrated rules engine to perform visual computing analysis of the constructed building elements to evaluate the compliance of construction works with established standards, codes, and regulations. The developed deep-learning compliance management prototype will be validated with data extracted from multiple building components against as-built drawings on construction projects to ensure the compliance of constructed elements.
