Abstract

This research aims to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of incentivised contracts in driving the achievement of net zero emissions and sustainability outcomes within the Australian construction industry. By examining the use of contracts that offer incentives for sustainable practices and environmental performance, this study seeks to assess their ability to foster meaningful change and drive the adoption of sustainable strategies throughout construction projects. The research will involve a comprehensive analysis of existing incentivised contract models employed in the Australian construction industry, considering both internal and external factors that influence their effectiveness. It will examine the contractual provisions, incentives, and mechanisms used to encourage contractors and stakeholders to prioritize net zero emissions and sustainability goals. The study will further investigate the outcomes and performance indicators associated with incentivised contracts, including energy efficiency, carbon reduction, waste management, and the use of sustainable materials. It will assess the extent to which these contracts drive behavioural change, innovation, and long-term sustainable practices within the industry. Additionally, the research will explore challenges and barriers that may impede the successful implementation of incentivised contracts, such as financial constraints, lack of awareness, and resistance to change. It will identify strategies and recommendations to optimize the effectiveness of these contracts and address potential limitations.  By shedding light on the effectiveness of incentivised contracts in achieving net zero emissions and sustainability outcomes, this research aims to provide valuable insights for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and construction professionals. Ultimately, it aims to contribute to the development of more impactful and sustainable practices in the Australian construction sector.
