Abstract

The construction industry consumes a large amount of natural resources making it a main driver to the scarcity of natural resources in the long run. On the other hand, solid waste generation and environmental pollution related to construction activities are considerably high as in other industries. The linear economy model (“take-make-dispose” approach) practised in the construction industry is the main reason behind the negativities which hinder the achievement of sustainability in construction. Converting the construction industry from the traditional “take-make-dispose” approach towards the circular approach is achievable through the concept of Circular Economy (CE) where strategies such as reusing, recycling, regenerating etc. are promoted. At the same time, evaluating construction projects considering the impact of implemented circular economy practices on the three dimensions of sustainability, economy, society and the environment, becomes critical and needs to be addressed in order to support informed decision-making of construction industry stakeholders. Thus, under this study, a methodology to assess the impact of CE practices on the economy, society and environment will be developed based on a comprehensive literature survey, followed by Delphi-based expert forums and case studies. The assessment methodology will be validated through the development of a web-based decision support system. The developed assessment methodology would ultimately establish an evaluation method to assess different CE project proposals within the social infrastructure development sector which contribute to sound decision making in project appraisal.
