Abstract

The need to control and reduce greenhouse gases has become urgent throughout the world. Carbon emissions trading has been established to be a reasonable panacea for curbing future levels of emissions. Carbon trading systems were originally not designed for the built environment. The overall goal of this study is to develop a built environment-tailored carbon trading framework. A theoretical framework for carbon trading in the construction industry is first developed. A suitable technique for modelling carbon trading is identified. Modelling of the interactions among the carbon trading system will be undertaken. The impact of carbon trading on reduction of greenhouse gas emissions will be evaluated. Management and implementation guidelines are also developed. The carbon trading framework arising from this study will aid the built environment in its climate change mitigation.
