Study Participation | Monolingual and bilingual children required for “more than talking” study


The Western Sydney University – BabyLab is currently recruiting children for a masters project which is investigating the relationship between learning two languages and cognitive skills.

You may be eligible if you;

  • Born in Australia
  • Are between 7.5 and 8.5 years old and
  • Either monolingual speakers or bilingual speakers;
  • Monolingual: Children from families who speak only English at home.
  • Bilingual: Children who speak another language as well as English at home (All languages welcome)

What is involved?

Your child will be asked to respond to some easy, game-like tasks that include:

  • Looking at some pictures and point to the picture that corresponds to the word spoken by the research assistant.
  • Sorting some cards by shape and by colour, depending on the instructions.
  • Responding verbally to some figures.
  • Telling as many words as a possible in the period of two minutes (words beginning by a given letter and words belonging to a category, as animals, fruits or other)

How long is the study?

Participation is approximately 1 hour.

Children who participate receive:

  • A child science degree
  • A small gift
  • $30.00 travel reimbursement


This study is being conducted at MARCS Babylab which is located on the Bankstown Campus (Milperra) of the Western Sydney University.
