The Jobs on Campus team

Who works in the Jobs on Campus team?

The Jobs on Campus (JOC) team is part of Careers.

The team reports to Freny Tayebjee, Manager, Careers, and comprises:

  • Danielle Lacey, Jobs on Campus Coordinator
  • Terrie Smith, Jobs on Campus Administrative Officer

We also have two brilliant interns who support the team:

  • Lisa Vanderzanden, Recruitment Assistant
  • Saada Georges, Recruitment Assistant

What does the Jobs on Campus team do?

Students are excellent resources with fresh and enthusiastic outlooks. The JOC team works with staff to harness this resource and place students into employment opportunities – both internships and HEW level – within business units. By providing students with work experience, the University benefits from fresh perspectives and knowledge while enhancing students' experience of university and their employability upon graduation.

The JOC team offers a range of services to ensure the placement process is as simple and user-friendly as possible. Services include:

  • Advertising to targeted current students
  • Collecting and collating applications
  • Responding to all job enquiries
  • Completing initial shortlisting based on your criteria
  • Scheduling interviews at your convenience
  • Providing comprehensive feedback to students
  • Contacting the successful applicant
  • Providing students with employment paperwork.

For internships, we also:

  • Advertise to targeted current students and recent graduates
  • Process student employment paperwork
  • Process fortnightly timesheets.

Where is the Jobs on Campus team located?

The JOC team is located at Kingwood campus in Building K.

Who does the Jobs on Campus team work with?

JOC is an internal service for staff and students. Therefore, JOC works closely with a range of staff depending on their recruitment needs, as well as with students. During 2014, JOC worked closely with 42 units to fulfil their recruitment needs – from Schools, such as the School of Education, to Divisions, such as Information Technology and Digital Services.

JOC also works very closely with the Jobs off Campus team, which liaises with external organisations to offer internships to students and graduates. If you have any industry contacts who would like to hire an intern, please direct them to Judy Holman, Careers Business Partnership Facilitator, on 4736 0388 or j.holman@westernsydney.edu.au

What would be a good example of the work that you are involved in?

Once an enquiry is received from a potential hiring unit about recruiting a student, JOC works with the unit to determine the selection criteria and student attributes required to ensure the best fit for the role is found. JOC then advertises the role and takes care of the entire process, with an average turnaround time of three to four weeks. JOC also provides application and interview feedback to students along the way to ensure they are gaining an understanding of the process along with skills from the experience.

Occasionally a shorter turnaround is required. For example, we were recently contacted with a request to arrange a student to begin work with a turnaround of two days. We successfully recruited a student who fulfilled the requirements and completed the placement to a high standard.

What challenges does the team face?

Our biggest focus and challenge are ensuring there are sufficient job opportunities for students. Taking measures to ensure staff know about JOC and the service available to them is essential to overcoming this challenge. On the other hand, it is also imperative that students are aware of the program and the associated opportunities to ensure JOC is attracting quality students to fulfil recruitment needs.

As JOC is a project funded by the government, the greatest challenge is not knowing how long this service will be available to students and staff.

What is the team focusing on in the next 12 months?

Over the next 12 months, JOC will focus on developing training initiatives to further enhance student career development and ensure students get the most out of the experience. Along with this, the team will focus on raising the JOC profile to ensure hiring units are aware of the service and that students are aware of the job opportunities and resources available to them.
