Running through a rainbow
Usually when you head out for a run in a white T-shirt and come back multi-coloured, something very wrong has happened, but when eight staff members recently hit the streets in The Colour Run, held at Olympic Park, Homebush, they crossed the finish line with a big smile on their faces. And why wouldn't they? They had just raised $640 for the HeartKids charity.
"Who would have thought getting dirty had its perks?" says Jamalyah Bama, when reflecting on the experience.
Late in February, the UWS "Student Central Boom Team" – comprising Serap Yilmaz, Emre Yanar, Patricia Zeait, Ekin Guner, Nadine Dardas, Sunita Prasad, Gabrielle Borg, Avinesh Kumar and Jamaylah Bama – joined thousands of others on the five-kilometre, untimed race where participants are doused from head to toe in different-coloured powders and, figuratively speaking, run through a rainbow. "Participants surrendered themselves to look like a coloured fruit loop," says Jamaylah.
At the end of the race, participants are treated to a gigantic "colour festival", with even more coloured powder thrown over the crowd.
The team gave themselves a target to raise $500 for their charity, which they far surpassed.
"The event was out of this world and staff members were able to raise money for a cause that is extremely worthwhile," says Jamaylah. "We wanted to do a fun team-building event that would also give us a sense of purpose by raising funds for a worthwhile charity."
Congratulations to the Student Central Boom Team on this great achievement.
