Pango: Giving local high school students an edge

The months and weeks that lead to the end of high school can be chaotic – think exams, assessments, applications for University, organising formal outfits and transport… It can all be a little overwhelming!

To help local high school students through this period, UWS has developed Pango, a free online social-learning platform designed for students who are keen to excel in their studies. By registering to the Pango network, students can connect with others across the Greater Western Sydney region who are going through similar academic experiences.

"By providing Greater Western Sydney students with the tools they need to succeed, we hope to help bridge the academic gap that is preventing many students from engaging in tertiary education," says Angelo Kourtis, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Students and International.

One of the most exciting aspects of Pango is the ability for students to access a free online tutoring service from accredited teachers. Other features include a career-planning tool that helps students narrow down their career options and matches them with appropriate degrees and careers, educational games, blogs by UWS students, study tools and videos and social collaboration.

Since a soft launch of Pango in August 2012, more than 2,200 high-school students have registered. "Pango's development is ongoing and we are constantly engaging both student and teacher feedback to improve the portal," explains Angelo. "Pango has been well received, with many high schools integrating the Pango portal, as well as its bespoke applications, into the classroom."
