Diversity Week: Variety is the spice of life
One of the things that make UWS such a special place to work and study is our diverse student and staff community. Did you know that there are more than 100 different ethnic backgrounds represented within the University's student and staff population?
Each year in September, UWS holds Diversity Week, which explores and celebrates the things that make us unique. As UWS is one of the most culturally rich universities in Australia, this annual event is a real showcase of campus life. Across the campuses, performers danced the samba, showcased African drumming, wowed with their musical and theatrical ability and cuisine from around the world was enjoyed.
The main event of this year's Diversity Week celebrations was the Bollywood-style events at Parramatta campus, which included an outdoor cinema screening, free henna tattoos, dance, theatre and an Indian food festival. Another interesting event was held on Bankstown campus: an exhibition of student and staff photography showcasing what diversity means at our university.
Princy Mathew, who is studying her Masters of Professional Accounting, says she enjoyed everything about Diversity Week, especially getting involved in the dancing and henna activities. "It was good to have something different to do on campus other than just go to classes," she says. "There was a good mix of cultural performances over such a short period of time. I didn't realise there are so many people from so many cultures at the University. Participating in Diversity Week meant I was introduced to a lot of new people. It was good to get involved."
