Mentoring with the Executives
Ever wished you could receive career advice from members of the UWS Executive? A handful of UWS employees were able to experience a mentoring session with members of the Executive in December.
The forum was run to allow six female early-career researchers to meet one-on-one with six members of the Executive Management Team. Each mentee spent 10 minutes discussing and receiving advice and information from each Executive member.
The mentors were Professor Janice Reid, Vice-Chancellor; Kerrie-Lee Krause, Interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor, (Education); Andrew Cheetham, Interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research); Gary Smith, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Engagement and International); Angelo Kourtis, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Students); and Paul Rowland, Executive Director, Strategy and Quality.
“It is anticipated that the Executive will learn about the lives of the junior women within the University, and the mentees will gain valuable guidance in relation to their future careers,” explains Deborah Sweeney, Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) Health and Science, who helped organise the event with Aggie Lim and the team in the Office of Organisational Development.
The six mentees selected for the session discussed their career aspirations and future goals with the senior executives.
Erin Kruger, a lecturer in sociology and criminology in the School of Social Sciences and Psychology, was one of the mentees. “The mentoring experience was informative, supportive and innovative,” she says. “The best aspect was its confidence-building effect; regardless of the many pressures faced by early-career researchers – with work and family alike – we are on the right track and have support from the University. Personally, I have found that this allows me to focus my energy and discern what I can reasonably accomplish in the timeframes available, centre on the work I most enjoy and am passionate about and what is most important at the strategic level to build a CV best suited for grant applications – and all with renewed energy and inspiration.”
Three speed mentoring events will be held this year. To express your interest or find out more information, contact Sandra Lawrence (opens in a new window).
