Winning ways – Jobs on Campus

Jobs on Campus intern, Scott Bevins

The winner of the Jobs on Campus Staff Competition is … Chelsea Maier from the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment.

As part of the launch of the Jobs on Campus program, a University-wide initiative to increase student participation in paid, on-campus employment, staff were invited to submit a proposal for a 150-hour internship. The Jobs on Campus team recruited an intern to work with Chelsea at the Rainout Shelter and Eddy Flux tower, where the intern will gain experience working in large-scale research facilities while learning how to use environmental sensors and work with a range of researchers and technical staff.

“The student will be helping with tree growth measurements, soil and tree respiration measurements, photosynthesis measurements and soil moisture measurements at the Rainout Shelters,” explains Chelsea. “There will also be the opportunity to work with PhD students, post-doctoral candidates and academic staff.”

Scott Bevins, a second-year Bachelor of Biological Science student, has been recruited to undertake the internship and says he is excited about learning how to apply research techniques and where to effectively deliver the results once they are complete.

“I intend to contribute everything I have to the science of environmental conservation,” says Scott. “This position has given me the opportunity to be involved in some of the most valuable environmental research in the world. Opportunities to assist world-class scientists in a world-class institution such as the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment are those which I will always pursue.”

“This is also a great avenue for spreading the word about the new research facilities open to UWS students,” says Chelsea. “The Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment has a suite of climate-change research facilities unmatched anywhere else in the world.”
