UWS has been named a Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) on Education for Sustainable Development for Greater Western Sydney.

UWS, through the Office of Sustainability, will work alongside fifteen major Greater Western Sydney regional partners including schools, TAFE, non-government organisations, and local government and business alliances to bring sustainability to life, through education in the region.

An RCE is a network of existing education organisations which is mobilised to deliver education for sustainable development to local and regional communities.

Professor Geoff Scott, Executive Director of Sustainability, says UWS is committed to making a difference to sustainability in the region.

‘A key focus for us is to establish the region as a living laboratory of sustainability using collaborative, action learning programs which are relevant, innovative, engaged and with a unique Greater Western Sydney narrative,’ says Geoff.

‘In order to ensure a sustainable future we want people of all ages to have a better understanding of the impact of their actions and commit themselves to creating positive social and environmental change.

‘Being an RCE gives us the opportunity to provide more mutually beneficial links, to bring together groups undertaking parallel work in different areas of the region, to leverage good practice and implement a more systematic approach to community, workplace, formal and informal education.’
