Digging deep: UWS staff help fund scholarships
Studying at UWS has become just that little bit easier for students awarded 2012 UWS Community Scholarships. Thanks to the contributions of staff, students, alumni and friends of UWS, the first UWS Community Scholarships have given five students the opportunity to focus more on their studies and less on finances.
The scholarships, which were awarded to students who have experienced hardship and demonstrated determination to further themselves through education, are valued at $5000 per annum.
“I am very excited and enthusiastic about receiving a UWS Community Scholarship as it will greatly help me to spend more time at home looking after my parents and brother,” says Antonious Nehme, a 19-year-old Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Law student and scholarship recipient who has been looking after his sick parents and brother as well as overcoming his own health problems while working part-time. “The scholarship will allow me to finish my degree without financial hassles, which will in turn allow me to achieve my goal of becoming a prosecutor.”
The scholarship recipients come from diverse backgrounds but all want to give back to the community once they have finished their studies.
Monique Luck is a single mother with four children who has decided to return to study as a Bachelor of Nursing student after 22 years. When her son was born 18 years ago and was in the special care nursery, the nurses who supported Monique made a big impact. “When I graduate, I want to work in paediatric nursing so I can give back and help other mums just like the nurses helped me,” she says.
Removing financial strain, the scholarships make buying textbooks and covering costs for travelling to the University and for printing study materials less stressful. “For these students, a scholarship means that they can focus more on their studies and worry less about the cost,” says Elissa Gale, Senior Development Manager of the UWS Development unit.
“The scholarships demonstrate the impact that each of us can make by giving together through small, regular contributions,” says Elissa.
