The Board of Trustees met on 12 April 2023 in Boardroom 1, The Chancellery, Level 2, Building EB, Parramatta South campus. A summary of matters discussed in the open session is provided below.
The minutes of the previous Board meeting held on 22 February 2023 were confirmed.
Main items considered by the Board:
Chancellor’s Report
The Chancellor briefed the Board on a number of matters, including the Australian Universities Accord – Review of Australian Higher Education System, the Chancellor’s individual meetings with Board members, the NSW State Election results, upcoming graduation ceremonies, the session with Business Western Sydney regarding the future of the University, and discussions on the Voice to Parliament regarding the University’s role.
Vice-Chancellor’s Report
The Vice-Chancellor provided an update to Board members on the Australian Universities Accord, an analysis of the state election outcomes, and an update on the current student load and revenue position. The Deputy Vice Chancellor, Indigenous Leadership presented the Indigenous Futures Decadal Strategy 2023- 2032, a document which provides a blueprint for Indigenous growth and development at Western over the next ten years. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic presented on the proposed Engaged Learning and Student Experience project, which aims to improve the University’s performance in the QILT results.
Chair of Academic Senate Report
The Chair of Academic Senate spoke to the Board on a number of matters presented at the most recent Academic Senate meeting, including the implementation of Graduate Research School Review, Quality Assurance processes, Microcredentials, the Senate’s role in providing feedback to the Australian Universities Accord, the Senate’s involvement in the TEQSA renewal process, and ongoing work to improve student feedback processes.
Audited Financial Accounts and 2022 Annual Report
The Board reviewed and approved the Audited Financial Accounts for 2022 and the associated University Annual Report.
Sustaining Success 2021-2026: In-Depth Analysis and Reporting
The Board received an in-depth analysis of two of the Sustaining Success 2021 – 2026 key performance measures. Key measure 1 is Grow the University’s Reputation, and key measure 2 is Adopt energy renewables in campus operations and advance toward carbon neutrality.
