Research Week 2025

On Thursday 11 September, Western Sydney University hosted our 2025 Indigenous Research Symposium, featuring the Seventh Indigenous Professoriate Lecture - a significant event celebrating Indigenous leadership, research, innovation, and academic excellence.

Professor Michelle Trudgett delivered the keynote address titled: “Reimagining Higher Education: Embedding Indigenous Leadership in Australian Universities.” This lecture examined historical and contemporary contexts to inform strategies for embedding Indigenous perspectives within institutional structures, advancing a more inclusive and equitable future for Australian higher education.

The afternoon program featured Flashpoint Presentations led by our Indigenous Higher Degree Research candidates and academic staff, showcasing diverse disciplines, methodologies, and approaches to Indigenous Research Excellence. Congratulations to Dr Sarah Kennedy for receiving the DVCIL choice award, Bradley Burns for receiving the PVCIL choice award and Lindsay McCabe for being awarded the People’s Choice Award.

Research Week 2024

The Division of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Indigenous Leadership proudly hosted the 2024 Indigenous Research Symposium on Friday, 23 August. The event featured an inspiring keynote address by Associate Professor Yvonne Clark, a proud Kokatha/Wirangu woman. Excellence in Indigenous Studies Research was highlighted through a series of dynamic 5-minute snapshot presentations by Indigenous Higher Degree Researchers and academics from Western Sydney University.

Research Week 2023

The 2023 face-to-face symposium ‘Indigenous Pathways to Future Knowledges’ showcased excellence in Indigenous Research at Western Sydney University. The keynote lecture was by Worimi scholar and Indigenous archival researcher and activist, Dr Kirsten Thorpe titled Unclasping the White Hand: Refiguring the Archives to Support Indigenous Living Archives on Country

The second segment consists of ten Indigenous flash-point presentations where Western Indigenous researchers, both higher degree research and academic staff, highlighted key progress in their respective projects.

Research Week 2022

On Wednesday, 2 November 2022 as part of Western Sydney University’s Research Week, the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Indigenous Leadership hosted a symposium on Unlocking Indigenous Research Excellence.

The event featured keynote speaker Associate Professor John Gilroy, a leading Indigenous scholar. The event highlighted Indigenous Research Excellence through presentations by Indigenous Higher Degree Researchers, academics, and non-Indigenous academics. These presentations encompassed a wide range of disciplines, methodologies, and methods, all of which have unlocked the many possibilities to achieving Indigenous Research Excellence. 

Research Week 2021

Western is proud to host keynote speaker Professor Bronwyn Carlson who holds the position Head of Indigenous Studies at Macquarie University. Western's Director of Indigenous Research, Professor Gawaian Bodkin-Andrews will introduce a number of Western's Higher Degree Research students and academic staff who will deliver 5-minute presentations on their research projects - all of which are Indigenous focused.
