Ms Sally Fitzpatrick

Ms Sally Fitzpatrick

Biography

Sally is a doctoral candidate in the Future Health Leaders program at the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, UNSW. Her research program is focussed on investigating the nature and degree of empowerment and transformation experienced by postgraduate students as they engage with Aboriginal health and wellbeing in a university context. This project builds on eight years experience convening postgraduate courses in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing. In addition, Sally’s research aims to inform educators about processes of lifelong learning essential to fostering institutional, professional and personal commitment to achieving culturally respectful and safe health care.

Sally is part of the inaugural Coordination Team of the Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing Stream of Maridulu Budyari Gumal, The Sydney Partnership for Health, Education, Research and Enterprise (SPHERE) where she co-facilitates the Education and Workforce Working Party. She is also a co-investigator on the Lowitja Institute funded Career Pathways Project.

Sally has been an advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander rights and justice for over two decades and is currently a member of the Close the Gap Campaign Steering Committee. Sally has held leadership roles in several community organisations including The Lillian Howell Project, a service for young women at risk of homelessness, the Women's Reconciliation Network, the National Sorry Day Committee, Filling the Gap Indigenous Dental Program, ANTaR and the NSW Reconciliation Council. Sally has written and produced community and school education resources to promote Aboriginal rights and social justice; Aboriginal health and community development success stories; and the Bringing them home Scorecard series.
