Mrs Penny Gardner

Lecturer in Counselling,
Arts Therapy & Counselling

Biography

Penny Gardner lectures in the Graduate Counselling programs, and has taught at UWS since 2004.  She is interested in interpersonal and intrapersonal apects of all therapeutic work, and is passionate about growing the 'person of the therapist' in all her students.  Her research interests relate to aspects of the experiences of therapy for both the client and the counsellor/ psychotherapist.  She has worked as a psychotherapist with Probation and Parole, a relationship and family counsellor in the Non-government sector, as well as with clients of all ages in a small private practice.  Her training is largely humanistic and, as with many practitioners, she has integrated various ways of working in her practice.  These include sensorimotor psychotherapy, emotionally focussed therapy, existential therapy, psychodynamic therapy and somatic therapy. She has a particular interest in attachment theory, and believes in being aware of the impact of small 't' trauma as well as major traumatic experiences.  She co-authored (with Hugh Crago) A Safe Place for Change.
