Biography

Dr Srinivas Nammi is a Senior Lecturer in Pharmacology and Academic Course Advisor (Medical Sciences) at the Discipline of Medical Sciences, School of Science, Western Sydney University. Dr Srinivas Nammi has a doctorate in Pharmaceutical Sciences, specialised in Pharmacology. Before joining the University of Western Sydney, Dr Nammi worked at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Sydney for three years.

Dr Nammi has completed all his academic degrees at Andhra University, in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, India. Since completing his PhD in 2003, he has gained extensive postdoctoral experience at the University of Tubingen, Germany and at the University of Manitoba, Canada. Dr Nammi has also worked as Head of Pharmacology in an industry where he was instrumental in establishing a new pharmacological research laboratory.

Dr Nammi has distinguished track record in Ayurvedic and Western herbal medicines research for more than 20 years and has made significant contributions to both basic and applied research related to drug discovery, biological evaluation and mechanistic studies with a special focus on metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. Dr Nammi has attracted competitive research funds from national (ARC, AISRF, NICM) and international (India - UGC & CSIR; Germany - DAAD), institutional (USYD; WSU) and industrial (Purapharm) bodies. He has 1 international patent and published over 90 scientific papers, 10 editorials and   3 book chapters. Dr Nammi has also contributed over 50 research abstracts published in the proceedings of National and International Conferences, Symposia and Seminars. Dr Nammi’s research has been cited so far in over 3000 publications with an H-index of 30. He has supervised 8 PhD, 8 Masters, and 15 Honors projects to completion.

Dr Nammi has significant professional outreach through his contributions in academic and scholarly activities. He is serving as Secretary for the Australian DAAD Alumni Association. He is frequently invited to talk and chair at national and international conferences and to adjudicate PhD theses from Australian and overseas universities. He is an international expert reviewer of a number of national (NHMRC, Diabetes Australia) and international research grant bodies. He sits on the editorial and review boards of a number of reputed biomedical journals.  He is also frequently invited to guest edit journal special issues and to edit/contribute to books/book chapters. He has been awarded a number of fellowships and awards including the prestigious DAAD Fellowship, Germany, SESQUI Postdoctoral Fellowship, Australia, and CSIR-Senior Research Fellowship, India. He has been honored with Marquis biographical listings in Who’sWho in Science & Engineering, Who’sWho of Professionals, Who’sWho in Asia, and Who’sWho in the World. In 2018, he has been awarded Research Excellence Award by the School of Science and Health, Western Sydney University for his outstanding contributions in research.

Dr Srinivas Nammi has over 20 years of experience in pharmacological research in the areas of endocrine and cardiovascular pharmacology through working on various projects in academic and industrial setting with special focus on the cause and treatment of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.Dr Nammi has distinguished track record in Ayurvedic and Western herbal medicines research for more than 20 years and has made significant contributions to both basic and applied research related to drug discovery, biological evaluation and mechanistic studies using various pharmacological and molecular biology methods. Dr Nammi has attracted competitive research funds from national (ARC, AISRF, NICM) and international (India - UGC & CSIR; Germany - DAAD), institutional (USYD; WSU) and industrial (Purapharm) bodies. He has 1 international patent and published over 90 scientific papers, 10 editorials and   3 book chapters. Dr Nammi has also contributed over 50 research abstracts published in the proceedings of National and International Conferences, Symposia and Seminars. Dr Nammi’s research has been cited so far in over 3000 publications with an H-index of 30. He has supervised 8 PhD, 8 Masters, and 15 Honors projects to completion.

  • Pathophysiological mechanisms and therapeutic interventions involved in: Insulin resistance, obesity and type-2 diabetes. Beta-cell dysfunction and Diabetes mellitus. Glucocorticoid excess and metabolic syndrome with special focus on 11β-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 1 (11β-HSD1).
  • Evaluation and identification of mechanism(s) of action of traditional herbal medicines in the treatment/prevention of: Obesity, Type 2 diabetes and its complications, Lipid disorders, Cardiovascular diseases and Oxidative stress
  • Mechanisms involved in low, moderate and heavy alcohol consumption (prenatal and postnatal) on the development of: Fatty Liver Disease, Metabolic syndome and Type 2 diabetes
  • Pharmacokinetics and drug interactions - Pharmacokinetic evaluation of traditional herbal medicines to discover biologically active compounds for the treatment of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes: drug-drug interactions and Herb-drug interactions
